Klaipėda Choir “Aukuras” will be led by its artistic director, Tomas Ambrozaitis, in a remarkable concert featuring soloists Mindaugas Bačkus, Kornelija Kupšytė, and Andrzej Bauer on cello. The program includes works by Vytautas Miškinis, Egil Hovland, and John Tavener.

This year’s festival expands its horizons with world premieres presented by top performers, inviting audiences to discover something new. One of Lithuania’s most prolific composers, Vytautas Miškinis, has created a new three-part cycle for cello, shamanic drum, and mixed choir titled He Came and Sat by My Side, based on poetry from Rabindranath Tagore’s Gitanjali (1912), for which the poet received the Nobel Prize in 1913. Commissioned by the Klaipėda Choir “Aukuras,” this piece will have its world premiere at the concert. The performance will take place in the sacred setting of St. Francis of Assisi Chapel, where the intertwining sounds of the cellos and the stunning voices of the performers will create a magical and enchanting musical experience.

The concert will also feature Agnus Dei by Norwegian composer Egil Hovland and Svyati by John Tavener for cello and choir. These works will be performed alongside the “Aukuras” Choir by Mindaugas Bačkus, artistic director of the Klaipėda Chamber Orchestra, as well as Kornelija Kupšytė, one of the most talented young Lithuanian cellists, and Andrzej Bauer from Poland, who has won first prize at the ARD International Music Competition in Munich, is a laureate of the Prague Spring International Competition, and has received a prestigious award under the patronage of the European Parliament and the European Council.
