To honor the 150th birth anniversary of Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis, the International Klaipėda Cello Festival invites audiences to celebrate the legacy of this renowned Lithuanian composer, painter, and choir conductor. This remarkable occasion will be commemorated through premieres performed by pianist Rokas Zubovas, the grandson of Čiurlionis, and Gleb Pyšniak, a talented cellist of the younger generation.
In 1902, while studying at the Leipzig Conservatory, Čiurlionis began composing a piece for cello and orchestra, which was likely intended to be a single-movement Konzerstück. The only surviving fragment of this composition is four measures of the piano score, which Čiurlionis noted in a letter to his friend Eugeniusz Morawski. To mark Čiurlionis’ 150th anniversary, three Baltic composers—Žibuoklė Martinaitytė (Lithuania), Arturs Maskats (Latvia), and Mihkel Kerem (Estonia)—have created dedications to Čiurlionis at the request of Gleb Pyšniak and Rokas Zubovas.
These newly commissioned compositions, inspired by the surviving four measures penned by Čiurlionis, serve as cultural and temporal bridges between the early 20th-century Lithuanian music pioneer and the contemporary musical landscape of the Baltic region. The program will also feature Čiurlionis’ piano miniatures, masterfully arranged for cello and piano by Lithuanian cellist Juozas Čelkus.
“Dedication to Čiurlionis” is a heartfelt tribute to the composer’s anniversary, expanding the repertoire of cellists in Lithuania and beyond with the unique and timeless essence of Čiurlionis’ music.
