A miracle always happens when Maestro David Geringas and his students meet on stage. A hymn to music will resonate during the spectacular opening concert of the International Klaipėda Cello Festival, uniting the dialogues of the teacher and his students into one. Joining the maestro in this musical journey will be one of the most outstanding cello virtuosos, Jens Peter Maintz, the exceptionally talented Chinese-born performer Jing Zhao, and one of Klaipėda’s brightest cello talents, Kornelija Kupšytė.
Is it possible to surpass a genius and become greater than the teacher? We will seek answers to this eternal question together in this unique musical dialogue.
The central theme of the International Klaipėda Cello Festival’s opening concert is “The Teacher and His Students.” According to the festival’s artistic director, Mindaugas Bačkus, “In the world of music, it is crucial to have a teacher—not just an authority figure but someone who helps you navigate the path of creativity, inspires growth, and encourages you to never stop evolving.”
Tonight’s teacher, one of the world’s most distinguished cello pedagogues, David Geringas, will share the stage with his former students. These include Jens Peter Maintz, one of the most prominent cello virtuosos and educators of the middle generation in Europe, the extraordinarily talented Chinese-born cello virtuoso Jing Zhao, and the brightest young cellist from Klaipėda, Kornelija Kupšytė. From an early age, Kornelija had the opportunity to attend Professor David Geringas’s lessons, and in this concert, she will perform a piece that played a pivotal role in her professional development—Ottorino Respighi’s Adagio con variazioni.
A special place in the program is given to the works of two composers whose anniversaries will be commemorated in 2025. One of them is Anatolijus Šenderovas’s Con amore – the Adagio section from the ballet Desdemona, which will be performed by Maestro David Geringas himself. In 2025, we would have celebrated the composer’s 80th birthday. The other piece is Camille Saint-Saëns’s The Muse and the Poet for violin, cello, and orchestra, marking the composer’s 190th birth anniversary. The program will conclude with the moving Requiem for three cellos and orchestra by renowned Czech cellist and composer David Popper.
The performances will be led by two conductors—Professor David Geringas and the orchestra’s chief conductor, Tomas Ambrozaitis.
