It is rare to encounter a singing cellist. Ana Carla Maza is a versatile musician—composer, instrumentalist, and singer—who brings the classical cello into the worlds of bossa nova, samba, and Cuban “son.” Her music is a whirlwind of stylish vocals and distinctive Latin American rhythms, enriched with jazz and Mediterranean influences. With her latest album Caribe, she reconnects with her roots and her hometown of Havana, taking listeners back to the lively descarga musical gatherings of the 1950s, filled with the joyous sounds of Caribbean rumba, the passion of Argentine tango, and the sparkling colors of Brazilian bossa nova and samba.
